Scope of Work

  1. Under this section of the specifications the contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment required for the completion of a functional system of grounds, conductors, air terminals, and other component parts for protection against damage by lightning in accordance with the current editions of all codes, standards, and regulations.

Submittals

  1. Shop drawings indicating the location, size, and means of support for air terminals, bonding connections, conductors, and grounding shall be submitted to the architect and engineer for approval.

Quality Assurance

  1. The Lightning Protection System shall conform to the requirements and standards for Lightning Protection Systems of UL, LPI, and NFPA. Upon completion, the application for the UL Master Label shall be submitted to UL.
  2. A qualified Lightning Protection contractor listed with UL and under the supervision of an LPI Certified Master Installer shall be required for the installation of the Lightning protection System.

Materials

  1. All components shall be new and of a design and construction to suit the application.
  2. All components shall conform to the requirements of UL 96A and NFPA 780 for the structure.
  3. All components shall be Aluminum, Copper, Bronze, or Stainless Steel.
  4. Components shall not be installed in locations where corrosion of dissimilar metals may occur.

Part 3 Execution

Installation

  1. Install in accordance with the manufacturers design.
  2. Install in accordance with the requirements of current editions of UL 96A, NFPA 780, and LPI 175.
  3. The Lightning Protection System shall be installed in a neat and inconspicuous manner so all components blend with the building appearance.
  4. All required sealing, flashing, pavers, slip sheets, or pads required for the Lightning Protection System shall be furnished and installed by the roofing contractor so as not to void the warranty.
  5. All trenching, backfilling, and compacting required for the grounding system shall be provided by the general contractor.
  6. A surge protection device conforming to the current edition of UL1449 shall be installed on the electrical entrance by the electrical contractor.
  7. Surge protection for telephone, radio, antennas, CATV, CCTV, data lines, satellites, and service entrances shall be installed by the system provider.

Field Quality Control

  1. Upon completion of the installation, the UL Master Label shall be obtained for the structures.

Summary

This specification for the lightning protection system is intended to be a performance type specification for furnishing the design, labor, materials and services required for the completion of a functional and unobtrusive lightning protection system consisting of air terminals, conductors, grounds, and other component parts for complete coverage of the building(s) or structures against damage by lightning, as indicated on the contract documents. The system shall provide safety for the building, building contents and occupants by preventing damage caused by lightning.

The lightning protection system shall be installed by a firm actively engaged in the installation of Master Labeled Lightning Protection Systems and shall be so listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.

The system(s) shall be designed and installed in accordance with NPFA 780, UL 96A, LPI 175 and the requirements of State and Local Codes and Regulations.

Submittals

Product Data
Provide manufacturer’s technical data of features, performance, electrical characteristics and finishes for each type of product indicated. Examples include grounding down conductors, thru-roof/thru-wall assemblies, roof conductors, air terminals, and other necessary components.

Shop Drawings
Provide the system layout designed specifically for the building(s) or structures included in the contract drawings along with details of how the products are to be used in the installation. Show the type, size, and locations of grounding down conductors, thru-roof/thru-wall assemblies, roof conductors and air terminals. The shop drawings shall include indications for use of raceway for concealment of system downleads.

Shop drawings shall be submitted to the Architect or Engineer for approval prior to commencement of the installation.

Certification or Qualification Data
Submit evidence of qualifications to the Architect or Engineer. This may include UL Manufacturer’s Listing, UL Installer’s Listing, and/or LPI Master Installer Designer Certification.
